Weekly Letter #4 September 12th, 2008

12 09 2008

Dear Parents,

Another week has flown by as I watched my students stretch and grow. Last week, as we were reading our social studies book, we came across a few paragraphs about “working for the common good.” I stopped and explored this concept with the students. We discussed serving others on many different levels, starting in our homes and extending into the community, California, our country, and the world.  As this year unfolds, your child will become more aware of societal issues and how he/she can effect change in positive ways. Your child will learn about ancient history and  I will draw parallels with issues in today’s world.

Last week, the kids named our 6th grade service-learning company Have a Heart-Help a Hand. Toward that end, the students have been collaboratively researching and writing short expository essays on issues that face the Nigerian people. On Friday, they started putting together posters with student-written essays which will be used at the Friends of Nigeria Annual Garden Tea next week, Wed., Sept. 17th at 9-11:30 a.m. About half of the class will attend the tea to work as food servers, greeters, and information sources.  Students will be available to present their research findings to the arriving guests. It will be a great day!

I sent home a parent-teacher conference preference form to you today. Please fill it out and return it with your child a.s.a.p. The sooner I get it, the sooner I will schedule a time to meet with you and discuss your child’s progress and goals. Conferences will be held the week of Sept. 22nd.

Special thanks go to those of you who contributed to our Pioneer Pledge Drive which ended today. If you’d still like to help fund our Science, Reading, and Music consultants via the pledge drive, please give your contribution to Kim in the office.

Here are some important dates for you to remember:

Sept. 17th – Have A Heart- Help A Hand serves at the annual Friends of Nigeria Garden Tea

Sept. 17th – Student Council election speeches ( 1:00 – 2:00)

Sept. 18th – PICTURE DAY

Sept. 22nd – 26th – Conference Week

Last but not least, I will continue to send home a hard-copy of this newsletter, usually on Fridays. I need you to review the work I send home with it, note any individual notes regarding incomplete homework or comments I’ve made, and sign and return the tear-off. This will allow me to know if you have received your child’s work and are aware of school happenings. Thank you.

Have a good weekend!

Sallie K.
